Restaurant: Bredovský Dvůr

During one of my first nights in Prague I set out to get dinner having not eaten all day. I had originally planned on getting something to eat at a small outdoor cafe that I had spotted earlier during my randomly walking all over the city. However, when I returned in the evening it wasn’t looking too lively and may have even been closed… who knows. Facing this set back I dealt with it as I usually do in these situations; I started wandering aimlessly down side streets looking for an alternative.

I recall my father remarking frequently when I was younger that in choosing restaurants you should simply go by the one with the most cars out front. There may have been something about local license plates in there as well. Anyway, having nothing else to go on I applied this method to my search for a place to eat. I wandered away from the more touristy parts of town and started looking for places that seemed to draw a good crowd. That’s how I came upon Bredovský Dvůr. The restaurant is (or at least appeared to me) a rather authentic Czech beer hall. I feel correct in this assessment because the staff did not speak English as they tend to around the major tourist attractions.

After burning up my very limited Czech and rigorously augmenting it with some desperate pointing at the taps I ended up with a very good Pilsner that I believe is brewed on site. Despite being from Colorado I’m no beer connoisseur but I thought it was good anyway. However, the real stand out was the entree I ended up ordering:

Deer

This is venison in a red wine sauce with walnuts and potatoes… I can’t be more specific than that because the rest of the words on the menu were outside of my limited vocabulary. I was able to gather that the venison is slow roasted over the course of 8-10 hours which meant I was able to cut it with my fork. The whole thing was excellent.

On top of this I loved the atmosphere of the place. The front room had more of a bar feel to it, but heads up people can and do smoke in here. I had forgotten that people used to do that and while it doesn’t bother me, I know it is a turn off for some. I happened to arrive during a soccer match that had the bar area full and quite excited to boot. Behind the bar area is more of a restaurant setting and there is even a nice patio outside which I didn’t get to experience.

But the best part was that for two (very large) beers and an excellent entree I managed to walk out spending approximately $16… and that includes the generous tip that I left for their having to put up with my limited Czech vocabulary.

Bottom line, if you find yourself in the neighborhood I’d highly recommend stopping in. It’s not upscale but it is a great value for the money.

Day 1 | May 26 & 27

An early day with a trip to the airport. Day 1 was actually two days collapsed into one for me because our route over the Arctic meant that the sun never set for me. After a solid 30 hours of traveling I touched down in Prague where I headed directly to my hotel, ordered a massive dinner and went to sleep.

Day -3 | May 23

With all of my serious moving out of the way I spent the day packing the things that I would bring with me. It ended up being a much more time consuming task than I anticipated. In the end I managed to get everything that I would need for the year compressed down into two carry on’s and my briefcase. In the evening I went to dinner at The Arvada Tavern with another of my oldest (second oldest in fact ha!) friends.

Day -4 | May 22

Another morning of racing against the clock to pack my things before the movers came. I am always nervous about movers but I was extremely impressed by MC Pro Movers and would highly recommend them. They were the most inexpensive movers I’ve ever used and they were the fastest. Once the move was done I headed over to my parents for dinner and was tricked into moving even more things!

Day -7 | May 19

This one rolled right over from the last. Didn’t make it home until very late and had to begin working right away once I did. Managed to power through for most of the morning and then had to leave for a parting lunch with one of my dearest friends at Il Fornaio. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring everything that I had intended to give her. After lunch it was off to meet the girlfriend while we both worked. After that we met some more of my very good friends for drinks at the Cheeky Monk before heading to a cocktail hour for The Lincoln Club and then dinner at Steuben’s.

Day -6 | May 20

Went to sleep with every intention of making it an early day but that fell apart immediately. Had lunch at a new seafood place in Cherry Creek called Blue Island Oyster Bar before heading back to my neck of the woods to set up my storage unit for the year to come. After that I dedicated some time to catching up on work and getting started on packing. After devoting some time to that and getting far too little work done I met up with the girlfriend and continued to work at Stella’s before we went to dinner at Sushi Den.

Day -8 | May 18

A busy day but not much to show for it in the way of preparation for my departure. Worked on economics projects in the morning and then met a friend and co-worker for lunch to celebrate his graduation and to say goodbye. We met at my current favorite restaurant for patio dining; Stoic & Genuine. We both headed over to Starbucks for the afternoon to work on things. I worked on political projects. Met the girlfriend at Starbucks and walked over to Nordstrom to pickup some Bose QC25 headphones for my trip. Who knew Nordstrom sold headphones? Lucky since the Cherry Creek Bose store closed. Then headed over to Odyssey, a cute Italian restaurant, for a much too big dinner. Then it was off to Baker Street Pub to see my friend Jason Vigil perform one last time before I head out. Closed that place down and may have neglected to go to sleep.
